Scranton, Pa. – To address a disparity in health care for individuals with intellectual and developmental disorders (IDD), Goodwill Industries of Northeastern Pennsylvania is offering a Diabetes Care and Prevention Project: Healthy Eating Club to individuals who participate in Community Participation Supports at its Dickson City location.
Funded by a $5,700 grant from AllOne Charities, the Healthy Eating Club meets twice a month and is managed by Fran Langan, Ed.D., R.N. The Healthy Eating Club focuses on:
- Menus and recipes that support a healthy diet and diabetes care
- Proper food portions
- How family culture shapes what and how we eat
- How to manage diabetes care
- How to use technology to support healthy diet choices
- Fun activities that encourage healthy eating, stretching, movement, and flexibility
The Healthy Eating Club will also include family members and caregivers as they often provide essential care and make many food choices for individuals with IDD and empowers individuals to be active in their health and diabetes care.
