Scranton, Pa. – Jane came to Goodwill Industries of Northeastern Pennsylvania as part of our Youth Employment Services Program. Referred to Goodwill by the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation, Jane explored possible careers and gained the skills necessary to join the world of work during a paid work experience as a studio assistant at Abington Art Studio, Clarks Summit.
Goodwill Employment Specialist Laura Bushinski worked closely with Jane throughout her placement. “During her time at the Studio, Jane, who is very reserved and quiet, really opened up, not just with myself, but also with Studio students and workers,” Laura said.
A student in the Scranton School District, Jane made the most of her time at the Studio. She gained valuable skills when she helped create sample lessons for young studio students and organized and prepared materials for use by instructors.
Prior to this experience, Jane had never used paints or worked with ceramics. At first, she was very timid with trying new mediums, but Jane is now much more comfortable at the Studio. She also interacted with others without prompting and helped younger students select paints and other tools needed for projects.
Way to go, Jane!
